THIS IS A VERY RARE CIVIL WAR ARTIFACT DUG AT GETTYSBURG--A SWORD/RIFLE BAYONET

This bayonet is a Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle Bayonet. It has no visible markings and was dug in Gettysburg. It has a total length of 25 inches and a blade length of twenty inches.

It will display very well and the photo hardly does it justice as it looks just rather bland. The blade is far beyond the sparkling bright you would see on an unused piece, but remember, this was buried in Pennsylvania dirt for well over a CENTURY! It does of course seem that in every movie, the soldiers have brand new and shiny swords. They wouldn't have been dug from the soil, but then they wouldn't stay new carried around for several years. And while it sounds rather gory, it probably had blood on it from more than one encounter with a Confederate soldier.

The blade is a bit uneven due to those years in the dirt, but look closely at the handle: It looks remarkable and retained that nearly new appearance whereas the blade (different metal) did not. In fact, looking even closer, I was surprised at just what excellent condition the handle is. This piece could be attached to a rifle as a bayonet or used as a short sword in close combat.

AND TO BE QUITE HONEST, I PERSONALLY FEEL LIKE THIS ITEM MIGHT BE ONE OF THE BEST BUYS IN THE STORE. If you have collected for very long, you know how difficult it is to find any Civil War sword or for that matter, any weapon from the war. And the odds are quite good that a sword found buried on a battlefield is often corroded, chipped and/or rusted.

I am sorry I do not have any certification that it was dug in Gettysburg. The original owner sold it to our consignor and told the story of where it was found roughly 100 years after it was lost and became buried.
