#173-CIVIL WAR SALE: RARE NAVAL POTOMAC PASS ALLOWING A SHIP PASSAGE
Most passes we have found from the Civil War--and the total is not very large due to their rarity--have one thing in common: It can be difficult to impossible to decipher the handwriting. This one has enough preprinted text to help with such an identification. I have had to make the difficult decison NOT to purchase handwritten documents, including passes, from the Civil War because I simply could not tell for whom they were issued, by whom, where and other rather important details.
This pass is unusual as virtually all of these rare items we have been fortunate to find and later sell are providing safe passage for a soldier or private citizen, often through enemy lines.
This pass actually isn't for passage on a steamer; it's allowing passage for the steamer. The US. Navy was quite busy during the war, often just in what you might call policing--making sure the ship wanting to go up the Potomic, for example, was of no risk to the Union.
Again, if the "pass" like a ticket interests you, this is a pretty special and rare item.
