SORT OF A TICKET--A CIVIL WAR PASS FOR 1ST CLASS PASSAGE ON STEAMSHIP TO HILTON HEAD

This is one of several Civil War rare passes we have in our inventory, following the sale of several others in our recent Civil War sale.

I have been very fortunate to find a variety of passes over the years, perhaps giving the incorrect impression that they aren't as rare as I have said. But I have spent countless hours researching for everything from magazine articles to books I've written...to items I have found for resale as well as being used in the publications.

I don't mean to sound pretentious about my ability to reserch. But there never is a guarantee you will EVER find what you are looking for, but the more hours you spend, the better your chances. Every collector--and of most anything collectible--has found this to be true. And I've devoted a lot of time hunting for world's fair tickets, Civil War passes and other items and I have been rewarded with many great finds over the years.

This document is for first class passage from New York to Hilton Head, S.C. in 1864. While not exactly a ticket...it is indeed a pass for passage on a steamer.

While this pass was included in our recent Civil War sale, it certainly can ride along with world's fair tickets--and I have also lowered the price substantially from what it was offered at in the Civil War sale.

Also we still have a half dozen terrific Civil War passes issued for a variety of reasons as written on the pass--to see family, to obtain medical care and so on. This one is especially nice; on a general's order, passage on a steamer. The majority of passes I have encountered over the years are for passage for varying times and reasons, but for "passage through lines" as opposed to being a pass requiring getting to docks and finding a person in authority to accept the pass.
