COLUMBIAN SO-CALLED DOLLAR FEATURING THE MICHIGAN STATE BUILDING

This is a tough medal to evaluate. I believe, judging from the obverse, that this medal is uncirculated. There are two smal rim nicks (5:45 and 6:30) and a few surface spots; but the detail on the Michigan State Building is excellent. Frankly, at a glance I expected to see obvious wear on the high points of the state building. But that is not the case. This is one of those that NGC and/or PCGS might decide to return ungraded or maybe they'd use that often-seen cop out saying it is ungradeable due to the spots in the field--with a tired explanation that it is "environmental damage."

Such a designation makes it very easy to avoid having to grade/slab, but that designation is often used for very inconsequential minor surface and/or rim issues.
This SCD, like several from the WCE, seem to be produced more for the state contingent than for handouts to the miscellaneous fairgoer. I would be sure that a copy would be presented to key figures on the WCE board and others deemed important to officers of the Michigan State commission and commissioners.

I personally find these minor surface and edge rather inconsequential and I would not hesitate to make presentations to state and other libraries.
