WORLD'S COLUMBIAN COMMEMORATIVE HALF DOLLAR DOUBLESTRUCK #ON530
This commem comes from the John Kennel Collection which we began selling in April 2019--6,000 items from the World's Columbian Expo and including 1,000 medals, coins and tokens.
John's collection featured dozens upon dozens of rarities and his collection is the backbone of my forthcoming book, COLUMBIAN RARITIES, to be published in 2022.
John was also enamored of doublestruck or repunched date Columbian halves. You can see in the first (enlarged) photo that the date clearly shows a double image. It also looks like the first word to the right has the same issue which would make it definitely doublestruck rather than repunched (done on the die when the mint determined it needed to be a better/crisper engraving).
John's 2x2 coin holder lists this simply as "Double date" and it also has the price I assume he paid, $85. I don't know if the seller offered him a discount from the price on the holder or if $85 was indeed the price. I also don't know when John added it to his collection, the 1970s or the early 2000s. I previously sold the several double die/repunched halves in his collection. I've arrived at nearly the end of this remarkable collection. Of the estimated 6,000 pieces I'd guess I have no more than 75 items left to sell.
