Beautiful Toned High Grade Medal/Fob Storecard from 1889 Paris Expo #S231
Quite nice lustrous 1889 medal/fob from one of the string of Paris world's fairs (1855, 1867, 1878, 1889, 1900) that were held approximately 11 years after one another during a 45-year period. Interesting that the reverse design/die is the same as the sorecard that has "Schloss" in a cartouche as if it were indicating an award.
This storecard advertises Kirkendall, Jones & Company's "warranted school shoes." I have never seen this medal (as a medal or as a fob) before and it no doubt was struck in some decent numbers if it was a giveaway at the exposition. Perhaps there are some number floating around in old drawers or shoeboxes in Europe, but I seriously doubt many Americans visited the fair 133 years ago and brought one home.
