World's Columbian Gilt Medal Government Building & Pagliaghi Columbus Bust

Another of many medals from the fair that feature the iconic bust of Columbus by Pagliaghi. It is interesting that there are more medals with this interpretation of what Columbus looked like than any other--but doesn't necessarily mean it is the most accurate. The image of Columbus on the commemorative half dollar is generally regarded as the best image of Columbus—whether as a piece of art or because experts believe it is the most accurate. This pose of course is what Pagliaghi felt Columbus would look like later in his life.

The medal is BU and has a little spotty discoloration that doesn't detract but can be seen clearly in the photos. A very scarce medal.
