Last Mayer High-Relief Columbian Liberty Medal with Box from the Kennel Collection Lot #131
While we just sold a proof in the original box, we have one last example remaining from the Kennel Collection that is virtually identical. One would need to have them side-by-side on a table to distinguish the very minor differences.
In looking at the photos, you can see a slightly different shade of blue on the box. The photo with the lid closed and no medal showing (the lighter blue) is very accurate to the actual color. The one pictured next to the medal in the box bottom looks slightly off in the photo, a bit too dark.
I have handle perhaps a dozen of these 35mm proofs and in 40+ years I doubt I have seen 5 or 6 that I did NOT buy or sell. I also sold examples of the giant 90mm version of this medal many years ago and in April 2019 when I first began selling the John Kennel Collection. Those most recent sales were lower than one would expect as each sold for less than $1,000. Twenty years ago I sold a gorgeous set of 3 90mm examples including aluminum, white metal and bronze in a private transaction (thus at a reduced price) to a longtime customerIn for $800 each. I do not know if I have seen more than one sale of a 90mm example besides the two from the Kennel Collection in the last ten years!
No known proofs have been recorded for the 90mm size, but those cited above were all gem prooflike. Should a 90mm example show up in the near future I would be surprised if it sold for less than $1500. While not quite so rare, these 35mm PROOFS (not prooflike) should sell for $400-$600 today. Ours is reduced and I'd certainly take advantage not just because of the price but the fact that you may not find another proof for quite some time.
