SF 1894-Official Medal from 1894 Midwinter Exposition in San Francisco #1154
This is one of the strangest world’s fairs or expositions I’ve ever encountered. The idea by the promoters was to capture the concessions, exhibitors and enthusiasm of the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition.
Especially for foreign exhibitors/concessions, the 1894 Expo provided an excellent and inexpensive opportunity to pack up everything and send it from Chicago to the Bay Area by train! The cost to create another exhibit/concession presence in perhaps a few years in the United States would essentially double their huge investment. A couple thousand mile train ride west would be the only cost with everything including personnel already in the U.S.
And for this medal 1894 fair management rather dramatically copied the reverse of Columbian medals HK 154 and 155. The medal has some uneven toning and spots but provides you with an excellent opportunity to acquire a quite scarce medal. Medals and souvenirs from the exposition are very sparse. Tickets, very rarely seen, also copied the advance admission tickets from Chicago with a person from California’s past in an oval on the front side in a currency-like appearance; I wish we had a few to offer but over the years I have only sold a couple and haven’t seen one for sale in years.
