UNIQUE AWARDED MEDAL, GEM BU 1958 BRUSSELS WORLD'S FAIR, 70MM BRONZE #SON142
This oversize (70MM) medal from the 1958 world's fair is stamped with the medal winner, Joseph D'Hondt on the reverse along with sharply struck shield/logo figure and "Exposition Universelle Bruxelles" and a very large "1958". The obverse detail on the building is extremely sharp as well. The medal's nearly matte finish gives an impression of a very soft strike, but is actually just the opposite. The obverse detail on the building plus the very crisp thin fence in the foreground and tree at the far left give it a prooflike appearance. The obverse has the designer's name at the lower left, P. De Greef. It is the only example of this medal we have seen and would have to be one of the rarest of exposition award medals known. The very large medal weighs 5 ounces.
