SPECTACULAR RICH GREEN CIVIL WAR 20 CENT SANITARY FAIR CINDERELLA STAMP #4458
I began collecting Civil War material even before I began writing several history books about the conflict and developing the award-winning Young Readers' History of the Civil War, which from the 1980s to about 2010 sold more than 600,000 copies.
Researching and writing Civil War histories only increased my interest in relics from the war.
I have collected Sanitry Fair material for decades, including documents, medals and stamps/passes. I sold my collection of passes to various Sanitary Fairs at Heritage Auctions about 10 years ago.
I hvae two really nice fair pieces in this auction, including this very rich green 20-cent stamp from the Great Central Sanitary Fair, one of the largest of all the Civil War fairs. This stamp was hinged. While it was very common for Union families to puchase these stamps at a fair and then add them to letters too their relatives in the army. Despite this, it is quite rare to find a Civil War postally used envelope with regular postage and a anitary Fair stamp such as this.
Please look at my Nantucket Sanitary Fair token it is quite scarce and only moderately rare—you might locate 1 or 2 every couple of years.
