Paris-Gorgeous Toned 55mm Bronze BU Medal Balloon Ascension 1878 Paris #1326
This spectacular medal is not just attractive, but quite scarce. The balloon ascension was hugely popular in 1878 and I suspect that this medal was NOT a giveaway for those who rode up in the balloon, unless the ride was quite expensive. I am assuming that this was an optional souvenir to be purchased after a ride aloft--an age-old opportunity for the happy rider to spend a bit more, kind of like the photos of you on the ride at Disneyland that you can purchase after the ride--a highly profitable but popular souvenir. In researching world's fairs I have always looked for such information but it nearly impossible to discover. One can usually find out the price of various concessions, but not of souvenirs.
Super medal from the 1878 Exposition in Paris. It is about 50mm in diameter, a larger souvenir medal than one might expect. The reverse is not quie as dark as the photos would indicate, also.
