Large Print from an Original Painting Done @ Midway Plaisance--Signed on the Mat 3s415
This is one of a series of reproductions of paintings and photographs that were matted and sold at the World's Columbian Exposition. An original artist's signature is on the mat and the original printed description of the artwork accompanies this print. The matted picture measures about 16 in. x 20 in. In the 1990s, we purchased this print along with a group of other prints and photographs from the fair, all matted to the same size, several of which were signed by the artist in pencil on the mat. We purchased the group from a friend who owned an antique store in Seattle and knew of my interest in the Columbian Expo. He acquired them from an art dealer who apparently purchased them from the estate of a person who bought them at the Columbian Expo. We only recently decided to sell the prints and have sold just one and not offered any others for sale previously. We can photograph one or more for anyone serious about purchasing them. They vary in price, more for the signed color pieces than the unsigned color prints or the unsigned photographs. We will offer some of these in The History Bank Store in 2021 and will sell the entire group as one lot (including this item if it has not yet been sold) at a further discounted price should anyone be interested in the entire group. The special pricing will be valid only during this sale, December 7-15. At least a few sets must have been printed and sold at the fair, although in our years of collecting and selling Columbian material we have only seen ONE of the similarly matted photographs (and none of the color reproductions) offered for sale. We would appraise the signed pieces at $300± and are offering it here for half that figure. For the right collector is should be a great steal--an addition to a collection. The shipping is for the postage required for a protective, oversize box and insurance for the appraised amount.
