Large NY Committee of 100 Bronze Medal Pre-Columbian Expo Celebration, Lot #146
This medal, like the companion white metal piece here, is not teribly rare, but it is highly desirable. I purchased my first example of this at a monthly coin show in Seattle in the 1980s; I was immediately enamored of the unusual perspective in the design of Columbus' three caravels circling the globe and Columbus. John Kennel had several of these medals in his collection and we have sold them for a bit over $100 up to well over $200, the highest figure being an exquisite BU specimen. This is probably in the top 10% in condition of those we have owned and sold over the last 35 years since I "discovered" the piece in Seattle. I still remember the dealer from whom I purchased it and my recollection is that it was a major expenditure for me at around $100. We're taking you back 35 years to offer a price wel below today's retail of $150-$175. We always recommend purchasing the highest quality of this or any medal that you can afford; when you know you can find another in a relatively short time, buying an average or lower grade piece to save $25-$50 just doesn't make sense.
