#161-CIVIL WAR SALE: RARE 29 OF THE FIRST 30 ISSUES OF "THE CONFEDERATE SOLDIER" PUBLICATION
This remarkable publication is not only rare, but especially so in terms of the virtually complete first 30 issues. The publication, first published in 1897, begins here with Volume 1, Number 1. I am quite sure that one could never find a comparable set or even come close; it is quite difficult to find single issues and I've never been aware of a collection of even half those published.
The journal, published in Louisville, was full of unparalleled news about the war from the perspective of the South. Included in each issue were many illustrations and articles about battles, leaders, soldiers and even the politics of the Confederacy. Volume 1, Number 1 contains a large color lithograph of Confederate regimental flags and also monuments and other color scenes. Included is a Black and White picture of Jefferson Davis and his Cabinet. Note that in small type the overline is "The People's Pictorial Edition;" we would be happy to take photographs of many examples of the illustrations for anyone seriously interested in acquiring this remarkable set; as you can see from the breadth of the items in this sale, we needed to limit the number of images over so many listings.
Since individual copies are in such demand, I considered listing all of these issues individually--at perhaps $75± per copy; these are from the Thomas McCarthy Civil War library and he (wisely) thought it would be a truly unique opportunity for a collector--and one that would never be repeated--to acquire the entire run from Volume 1, Number 1 (March 15, 1897) through Volume 1, Number 30 (October 4, 1897) intact. I would agree that it can never be found again and should be made available as one lot.
All of the issues are comparable to the one pictured, intact, dog-eared to some degree but in highly collectible condition. And we've priced these at less than $42 per issue.
