#182-CIVIL WAR SALE: NORTH MILITARY HALL PHILADELPHIA BU RED/BROWN TOKEN

I believe that this Civil War token for "North Military Hall" was advertising a Union gathering location and the illustration at the center of the reverse would indicate it was a music hall. I have seen speculation that it was in conjunction with a Sanitary Fair, but that was just conjecture of an expert in the Civil War.

l'd call it red (grading services would no doubt say 'redbrown'). It is a wonderful red color and uncirculated. The token has some dark spots on the reverse but overall the CWT has excellent eye appeal. Because so many CWT's suffered from weak strikes as well as discoloration many truly uncirculated pieces are not recognized as such. I personally don't feel that slabbing is particularly useful--with an exception being in cases where the collector (or seller) isn't sure if the CWT is or isn't uncirculated or might be a forgery. While there have been a HUGE number of forged coins on ebay in 2025, I've never seen one for a Civil War token.
