#178-CIVIL WAR SALE: COLOR HAND-ENGRAVING "BATTLE OF FREDERICKSBURG"

This color enraving is from the London Illustrated News. English Publications were well-known for their impressive editorial coverage of the Civil War.

The publication noted that this was "from a sketch by our Special Artist;" it has a label from a London antique dealer on the back noting that it is guaranteed to be more than 100 years old--at the time the illustration was sold to a collector by the antiquarian dealer. It may have been sold by the dealer in the 1960s but the newspaper (and its illustrations) were published at the time of the Civil War. The actual engraving measures 13 3/4" x 9 3/4" and is in excellent condition.
