#198-CIVIL WAR SALE: 1864 RECEIPT FOR SOLDIER'S PAYMENT (LIKELY FOR ENLISTMENT BONUS)
The payment appears to be for Christian Boettner and it has both a notary seal and a U.S. 2-cent reveue stamp. The language of the receipt seems a bit contradictory in its wording. It notes that the money is from the Wisconsin State Treasurer's office and for Christian Boettner, yet it reads that it is "from" Christian Boettner and that HENRY Boettner is known to the notary...so it can be paid/accepted. The notary seal was required by the State Treasurer's office and as was the two-cent revenue stamp.
It's all in order, just a little confusing between the financial details between Christian, Henry and the Wisconsin Treasuerer's office. It is a handsome document and one of so very many government (state and federal) pieces that are in collectors' hands and in museums, so that they are preserved.
We have an excellent variety of documents from the Army, individual states and andf individuals in this sale. Also, due to the "swirly" and fancy writing I cannot be certain of the amount being dealt with here. It appears to be $40; at least the names of the two members of the Boettner family are surprisingly legible.
