AYP 1909- Very Rare Package/Promo Materials & Request for California’s Participation
This lot is a unique package and contains numerous items that were sent from the AYP to the Governor of California soliciting the state’s participation in the Seattle World’s Fair. The materials were sent in 1907 as Seattle raced to line up state, foreign and private exhibitors. Two years from opening was hardly a head start. Included here is the letter to the governor, the original envelope with the official pre-fair imprint (later every type of documentation had the fair logo, but it was not prepared yet in 1907) and a very early “plan and scope” of the fair from the AYP’s Publicity Department printed in 1906.
It is very rare to find such an early official correspondence and pre-fair promotions, not just for the AYP but for any exposition. The bar was set very high after Moses Handy promoted the Columbian Expo around the globe in a campaign that would rival the work of the best 21st century ad agency!
The prospectus included here did a comprehensive job of explaining the purpose and scope of the fair and its economic importance not just to Seattle and Alaska but the entire west coast that was anxious to court business from Asia.
It may be difficult to package the fragile papers with a 3D item to save money on shipping, but it easily could be sent with any other flat material to save the cost. We always send paper such as this with more than the minimum of protective cardboard.
