Before the Columbian Expo, This European Medal has a Unique Image of Columbus, Lot #148
This medal in the Kennel Collection is quite attractive and features a unique portrait of Columbus with very curly hair and no beard. I would say he looks more like any number of historical figures than Columbus. John Kennel had noted in his collection that this medal was from a numsmatic society and in the Series Numismatica. I know that many Columbian collectors also collect Columbus medals associated with the 1492 voyage to America but with no connection to the World's Columbian Exposition. Eglit in his 1960s catalog of WCE medals lists many (perhaps thirty or more) such medals. In our forthcoming 2021 book on Columbian Medallic and Ticket Rarities we will discuss and list medals in Eglit we feel are extraneous, while providing information discovered since Eglit's book was published. We feel the price of this medal is very low, but we have no information on its rarity.
