Look Closely: A Package of FIVE Highly Desirable Invitations to the Columbian Expo Dedication
Most Columbian collectors are familiar with the fact that there are TWO different sets of Dedication materials/invitation packages to the fair. The date was changed by a week necessitating reprinting of thousands of documents. The two ornate large pieces are the brochure-like invitations for both dates; the other large document is a program of the Dedication. The smaller pieces are a personalized invitation insert card and the actual invitation that fits into that small envelope. The large invitations virtually always have a horizontal crease in the center. They were mailed folded in half I supsect to accommodate postal requirements and to save both money and effort as opposed to having them sent flat and unfolded. If you own an unfolded piece it should command perhaps a 25% premium in value; and invitations with a named individual of note could increase the value several fold. Last year we sold an invitation to the poet Eugene Field which brought a significantly higher than normal price. We will mail these UNFOLDED, full size in a large (10x13 inch) well-padded envelope. FYI, one could expect to pay from $50-$100 for each invitation and on the higher side of the scarce program. The small envelope and personalized invitation card typically sell for about $20-$35 and $35-$50 respectively, giving this 5-piece lot an estimated retail value of in the $225-$385 range. We used a range of $75-$100 for the program. Our price represents a more than 30% price reduction at the lower figure, about 60% at the higher figure. The slightly higher than our normal $4.00 shipping is to cover the larger sized package mailed flat and insurance.
