K3017 An unusually strong souvenir statement on a product from the fair

$85.00

The box is about three inches square and an inch deep and it appears that rather than giving it away, the manufacturer sold each box of Hygienic Complexion Beautifier for fifty cents. As you can see from both sides of the box, one is completely devoted to this being a souvenir (which lends me to wonder if the fifty cent powder was actually given away at the fair); that this box survived 126 years is very surprising. It is a light cardboard and the printed covers have been pasted on; it was cut open at the center so that its owner could use the highly touted powder. Once cleaned when empty, the box could adorn a dressing table or shelf as a souvenir. But something this fragile surviving in such excellent shape seems quite unlikely. But survive it did, probably on display out of harm's way for years and then stored away with care for even longer. I would not recommend using the box for trinkets; a few uses a week and you'd no doubt have a tear or sunken lid to deal with. A Columbian collector today, well versed in the arts of protecting the fragile could I'm sure find a home in a cabinet for such an attractive piece.
