90mm, 8+ Ounce Medal from the World's Columbian Exposition
I don't know any history on this piece other than it was in John Kennel's collection, which included dozens of previously unlisted medals. This piece is huge at about 8.1 ounces and 90mm in diameter. At first it looks almost cast rather than struck, but a second look perhaps contradicts that. It is a very soft strike if it was struck versus cast. The detail is not sharp and again, I apologize for my inability to tell you what country this medal is from; I cannot tell from the legends on either side. It may be Spanish but the use of the "V" for the "U" might just be a design element and the weak strike makes it difficult, as well. But it certainly is citing King Ferdinand, also. We've priced this piece very low because of the soft strike or the casting, but it is an unusual and large medal that many collectors might find to be a very nice addition to a Columbian or just a medals collection.
